At the beginning of a game last week, when the pallino was thrown, it hit the backboard. We did not have a rule listed about this event, but decided based on experience, that the pallino would be transferred over to the opposing team. Turned out this was the right call. We plan on incorporating the following rule from the Bocce Standards Association. ( Link). 1. The pallino is the first ball put into play and is thrown underhand from behind the pointing foul line. The pallino may be bounced off the sideboards.
2. The pallino must end up across the center line and at least 12 inches away from the sideboards or backboard without hitting the backboard. If a thrower fails to do this, the throw goes to other team. If the second throw fails to place the pallino into play, the pallino is placed approximately in the center of the hitting foul line at the opposite end of the court in order to speed up play. The addition of requiring a distance of 12" from the sides or rear wall seems like a good idea. Any thoughts?

Hi- I don’t agree with this new rule being put in place in the middle of the season. For starters, are we really breaking out a ruler to measure 12” as opposed to let’s just say 8”? Sounds like a waste of time on an already timed game. Also, some teams purposely throw the pallino longer, as a strategy. If this is going to be implemented, I feel it shouldn’t start until next season.

I agree that rules shouldn’t change mid-season; It’s inconsistent.
If the rule is changed however, despite our objections, I think it needs to be measured immediately by Larry, to keep things moving. This will ensure accuracy over attempting to eyeball it.

Good point about the game already being timed. We wouldn’t want to slow things down. Thanks for the input!

I don’t agree with the pallino being 12 inches from side wall or back wall, the court is small enough as it is. As far as the pallino bouncing out of the court I think the round should be restarted but if a regular bocce ball flys out of the court that ball should stay out

And if you mess up throwing the pallino the other team should get to throw it

Considering the feedback, how about this rule clarification?
1. The pallino is the first ball put into play and is thrown underhand from behind the pointing foul line. The pallino may be bounced off the sideboards.
2. The pallino must end up across the center line and not hit the backboard. If a thrower fails to do this, the throw goes to other team. If the second throw fails to place the pallino into play, the pallino is placed approximately in the center (left-right) of the field and 12" from the backboard in order to speed up play.

I like the revision. I don't believe the proximity to the sideboard should effect from being a legal throw as our courts are also narrow.

And if the palling ball hits the side wall and then hits the back wall on the first throw it should still be a dead ball and put it 12 inches off back wall in center !
